You're targeting an American audience and you suspect that the reason so many people got the answer wrong is essentially because Americans are so knowledgeable regarding the history of math that they confused order of operations from a 1917 text with modern order of operations. Quick question: What the heck is BODMAS? Never learned that in High school math. Also, I think this guy mis-used the order of operations or maybe I didn't watch it right. In the first go through of the problem he did the division first. In the second go through he did multiplication, then division. Also, why does it say (If same precedence, left to right) when you're supposed to do the problem step by step (EX: Parenthesis, Exponent, Multiplication, Division, etc.) He combined the MD/DM step into one and added a rule onto it which contradicts the purpose of PEMDAS, which is to follow the steps in order.

So depending on how you learned it. It is either 1 or 9. Neither of which is technically wrong. Just today we go with 9. Because well going left to right. And changing parentheses into multiplication. Takes a lot more energy than. Just doing the parentheses first until they are gone is just way to simple. We must make it complicated.

Here is the issue, there is a symbol missing in the equation to result in the answer 9. If the equation read like so
6 ÷ 2 x (1+2)...the answer would indeed be 9. Due to the lack of that multiplication symbol, you must distribute the 2 outside of the parenthesis. i.e
6 ÷ 2 (1+2)
6 ÷ 2 (3)
6 ÷ (2x3)
6 ÷ 6 = 1
Go to any Math professor with a Masters Degree and they will tell you the same. Math can be confusing so I can understand where the issue comes into place but if you are going to post a video and bring up some 1917 article and call it a Historical way to look at math...This is the glorious thing about math...it does not change...there may be another way to arrive at an answer but there is always THE correct answer.

It is 1 IF You first use the Distributive Property. You totally forgot that.
